It’s not hard to see why many homeowners choose to buy new molding and plastic after a molding failure.
But if you’re buying your first molding replacement, you may be better off investing in a mold removal and replacement process, according to a new study.
The findings were published this week in the journal Appliances and Environmental Science.
“Mold damage is an expensive problem and one that most homeowners don’t see coming,” said study co-author Rachael Burch, a doctoral candidate in materials science and engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
“But if you know you need mold removal or replacement, it may save you money in the long run.”
A cost-effective mold removal procedure When it comes to mold removal, the most important factor is cost, Burch said.
For instance, mold removal is often performed at a minimum cost, which can be prohibitively expensive for many homeowners.
The cost of mold removal can range from $5,000 to $50,000, depending on the size and complexity of the mold.
The most common mold removal method is the “rebuilding” method, where a mold is removed from a mold repair site and then recycled to be used for other repairs.
That method typically costs between $500 and $1,000.
However, the study found that for the majority of mold repairs, the average cost of the procedure is between $300 and $500.
For homeowners who are replacing their first mold, the cost of replacing a mold can vary from $100 to $200, the authors reported.
A more affordable mold removal approach involves using a “recovery molding” process.
In this process, the mold is used to build a new mold for a new job.
When the new mold is assembled and tested, the new structure is then cut out and reused.
for the most part, the recovery molding procedure does not cost significantly more than the mold removal process, Bunch said.
Burch and her colleagues used data from a survey of more than 500 homeowners to determine the average repair cost per mold replacement, and how much they would pay to use the recovery method versus the mold repair process.
The researchers found that homeowners who purchased a mold replacement or repair in-house at a cost of $1 to $20 less per month than the cost to repair their existing mold cost less than $40 per month to repair, or $200 to $400 per month.
The study also found that the recovery process was more cost-efficient than the original mold repair, as the cost per month spent on mold removal was significantly lower than the repair cost.
The authors estimated that if a homeowners mold replacement costs about the same as the original repair, the homeowner could save $200 per month and would have to spend $60,000 or less per year to repair the mold, which could save him or her $4,000 per year.
Bunch believes that homeowners should also be aware that there are other options available.
“The most common way for homeowners to get a mold reduction is to replace a new product with a mold-free product.
You may have to get it professionally done, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best solution,” she said.
In addition, if a homeowner’s mold problem has already been resolved, he or she can use a free mold removal service that will replace the mold in the mold remediation facility and return it to a healthy state.
the study also revealed that a large number of homeowners are not aware of other ways to improve their mold situation.
“Many people think that mold removal requires a whole new process,” Burch explained.
“For many homeowners, mold remedial services can provide an inexpensive and effective solution to their mold problem.”
the authors found that a home remodeling company could have a mold remedying process for as little as $150.
The company could provide a mold restoration kit that includes a mold re-sealer, mold-removal equipment, a mold cleanup tool, and the necessary chemicals and other equipment to perform the procedure.
“You can get a free and inexpensive mold removal kit at home improvement stores or from a home improvement store,” Bunch explained.
“Molds can be extremely difficult to remove, so a mold treatment and mold removal company may have a specialized mold removal product that is only available to certain types of homeowners.
These companies should be aware of the additional costs and potential complications associated with using their products in mold remedials,” Bada said.
