Ring and Nest let police view your video doorbell without your permission — what to know

Ring has been been in the news recently, and not for the best reason.The Amazon-owned smart doorbell manufacturer has come under government scrutiny lately due to its relationship with local law enforcement. 

Specifically, Senator Ed Markey (opens in new tab) (D-Mass.) released findings that indicate Ring has provided law enforcement with user footage 11 times so far this year without consent from users or a warrant from a judge. All law enforcement was required to do was complete an emergency request and submit it to Ring.
